San José del Cabo: the quieter half of Los Cabos

San José del Cabo is the colonial town 15 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, with a walkable historic district, a Thursday Art Walk from November to June, and the best restaurant scene in the region. It is quieter and cheaper than Cabo San Lucas, and the beaches in front of the hotel zone are mostly not swimmable.

San José del Cabo predates tourism by two and a half centuries — the mission was founded in 1730 — and the historic district still reads as a Mexican town rather than a resort strip. The plaza, the church, and four or five blocks of galleries and restaurants make up the core.

The Gallery District's Thursday Art Walk runs from November through June, roughly 5pm to 9pm, with galleries open late and streets closed to cars. It is the best free evening in Los Cabos.

The hotel zone is a separate place, about ten minutes from the plaza on the coast, and it is where the all-inclusives are.

What to do in San José del Cabo

San José del Cabo: common questions

Is San José del Cabo better than Cabo San Lucas?

For food, walkable town character and sleep, yes. For nightlife, boat departures and swimmable beach, Cabo San Lucas. They are 45 minutes apart and most visitors see both.

Can you swim in San José del Cabo?

Mostly not. The hotel zone fronts open water with a steep shelf and strong undertow. Palmilla and Chileno, both in the Tourist Corridor a short drive west, are the nearest reliably swimmable beaches.
