Baja California Sur
The six areas of Los Cabos, compared
Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico splits into six places that feel entirely different: Cabo San Lucas for nightlife and boats, San José del Cabo for food and quiet, the Tourist Corridor for swimmable beaches, plus Todos Santos, the East Cape and Pedregal. Where you sleep changes the trip more than which hotel you pick.
| Area | Nightly rate | From SJD | Character | Stay here if |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cabo San Lucas | $180–$700 | 45 min | Loud, walkable, boat-centred | You want nightlife, the marina, and to walk to everything |
| San José del Cabo | $140–$550 | 15 min | Colonial, low-rise, food-led | You want galleries, restaurants, and to sleep at night |
| The Tourist Corridor | $300–$1500 | 30 min | Resort-isolated, beach-first | You want a swimmable beach and a quiet resort |
| Todos Santos | $120–$450 | 90 min | Artist town, low-key, Pacific | You want galleries, quiet and good food away from resorts |
| The East Cape | $100–$600 | 75 min | Remote, diving-led, undeveloped | You dive, kiteboard, or want genuinely empty beaches |
| Pedregal | $350–$2500 | 50 min | Gated, residential, view-led | You want a villa, a view, and to be close to town but above it |
- Cabo San LucasCabo San Lucas is the marina town at the southern tip of the peninsula, 45 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, and it is where the nightlife, the boat fleet and the Arch are. Stay here if you want to walk to bars and boats; stay elsewhere if you want quiet. Hotels run roughly $180–$700 a night depending on season.
- San José del CaboSan José del Cabo is the colonial town 15 minutes from Los Cabos International Airport, with a walkable historic district, a Thursday Art Walk from November to June, and the best restaurant scene in the region. It is quieter and cheaper than Cabo San Lucas, and the beaches in front of the hotel zone are mostly not swimmable.
- The Tourist CorridorThe Tourist Corridor is the 20-mile stretch of Highway 1 between Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, and it holds the region's best swimmable beaches — Chileno, Santa María and Palmilla — plus most of the luxury resorts. You need a car or taxi for everything; nothing here is walkable.
- Todos SantosTodos Santos is a designated Pueblo Mágico on the Pacific coast, 60 to 75 minutes north of Cabo San Lucas on Highway 19, known for its galleries, its 1733 mission and its restaurants. It works as a day trip or a two-night base, but the Pacific beaches here are dangerous for swimming.
- The East CapeThe East Cape is the coastline running northeast from San José del Cabo toward La Ribera and Cabo Pulmo, about 90 minutes to two hours from Cabo San Lucas. It holds Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park, the only hard coral reef in the Sea of Cortez, and it is the least developed part of Los Cabos.
- PedregalPedregal is the gated hillside neighbourhood immediately west of Cabo San Lucas marina, a five-minute drive or a steep fifteen-minute walk from downtown. It is villa rentals and a handful of high-end hotels with the best views in the region, and its beach is Pacific-facing and not swimmable.
