Todos Santos sits in an oasis on the Pacific side, about 50 miles north of Cabo San Lucas. It was a sugar cane town, collapsed when the water ran short, and was repopulated from the 1980s onward by artists.
The centre is four or five blocks around the 1733 mission church. There are serious galleries, several restaurants that would hold their own anywhere, and the Hotel California, which has no connection to the Eagles song.
Los Cerritos, about fifteen minutes south, is the region's main beginner surf beach and the one Pacific beach here regularly used for lessons.
